On the heels of Saturday’s bust of a snowstorm (we’ll refer to it as Winter Storm Trubisky from now on), Central and Southern Wisconsin will receive a consolation prize of sorts in the form of a light snow event tonight. Snow will begin tonight around 6pm in the western part of the state and gradually spread east through the evening, likely arriving in Madison between 7 and 8 pm. In general, 1-3 inches of new snow is expected for most of the area, including Madison and Green Bay. Areas to the southeast, including Milwaukee will likely see lower amounts in the range of a coating to an inch.

The snow will be light and likely will not have a significant impact on travel. However, cold temperatures will allow the snow to coat roadways, likely creating slick conditions in spots overnight into Monday morning. The snow is not expected to reach Green Bay until around 9-10 pm, so there will be minimal impacts on the Packers game. Fans driving home from the game should be alert for possible slick spots and minor travel delays, especially if they are heading west, where snow will have begun accumulating earlier in the evening.
And Now a Little Bit About Yesterday
Well that storm sure flopped. As you can probably guess, it was a difficult storm to forecast, and for those of you who were keeping score our forecast map was far from perfect. In short, the storm tracked farther to the east than expected and did not get organized as well as forecasted, leading to less moisture and therefore less snow than anticipated. While there is plenty of room for improvement, our forecast was not a complete whiff. Our predicted snowfall numbers were significantly lower than many other outlets and snow totals were within our predicted range in much of the southeastern part of the region, where our map did the best. We also correctly identified, although probably underemphasized, the threat for significant icing in the Milwaukee area. Unfortunately, we were not as accurate in the northern parts of the region, where our projected snowfall was considerably too high. There is definitely plenty to learn from and improve for next time.
